3:40 PM CASE STUDY: Footscray University Town: The Joint Initiative with Maribyrnong City Council and Victoria University to Revitalise Student and Community Engagement

Footscray University Town is a joint initiative between Maribyrnong City Council and Victoria University in order to revitalise Footscray and deliver long-term benefits to both students and the community. With 20 000 students studying in Footscray, the plan will not only deliver a new 500 bed student accommodation, but increase the commercial opportunities and growth which prospers the university and social student life. With reference to the City Council perspective on these future development plans and drawing on the six key pillars to position the success of the project, Nigel will discuss:

  • Developing the business plan and road map: How creating a high level, senior planning group ensures both the council and university advocates for the right vision and project requirements
  • More than an urban renewal project: How strategically working with the right contractors and developing the right partnerships will help to generate confidence, investment and business growth for the council, University and community at Footscray
  • Unlocking and building cultural diversity as a key initiative to drive International students to the West of Melbourne
